A Better Way

Duckrowed mediation helps people move from conflict to resolution, efficiently and calmly.

It’s not about winning or proving who’s right.

It’s about getting unstuck, understanding what’s really going on and finding a way through.

Most disputes aren’t really about legal positions. They come from crossed assumptions, strained relationships, or conversations that went off track.

When that happens, people often feel pressure to defend themselves or prove they’re right. That pressure makes resolution harder, not easier.

It can also leave people feeling uncertain with no clear next step.

Mediation creates the conditions for a more respectful and productive conversation — one that creates space to sort things out, understand what’s really driving things, and make progress.

As that happens, what once felt unclear or out of reach begins to take shape, and a resolution starts to feel possible.

How Resolution Happens

Mediation works when people are given the space and structure to work toward an agreement.

Tensions begin to settle Emotions are acknowledged so they don’t take over.
Each perspective is fully heard Both sides understand where the other is coming from.
The real issues become clear The conversation focuses on what matters most.
Practical options begin to emerge Clear next steps are identified that work in the real world.

We start by creating space for the conversation to settle. Conflict often escalates because people feel unheard or misunderstood. Creating space for each person to speak and be understood is the first step toward clarity.

From there, we sort out what matters — not just positions, but concerns, expectations and what each person needs going forward.

As that clarity develops, practical options start to form. We explore what could support a lasting outcome and test whether it feels fair and workable to everyone involved.

My role is not to decide who’s right, but to guide the conversation toward an agreement that feels fair and holds up over time.

What I Help Resolve

Most disputes don’t need a courtroom.

  • Contract and payment disputes
  • Business and commercial disputes
  • Property and neighbour issues
  • Employment conflicts
  • Family conflicts (not divorce)

If you’re stuck, I can help you make progress.

People come to mediation for many different reasons, but the common thread is usually the same: something has gone off track in a relationship, agreement or shared situation, and it needs a way forward.

Sometimes the issue is practical and concrete. Other times it's more personal. Often it is both.

In many cases, people arrive unsure how to make progress — even when they want to. Mediation creates a structure where resolution begins to come together.

I work with people in business, workplace, neighbour, family-related, interpersonal, community, and organizational conflicts where a thoughtful, structured conversation can bring clarity.

Sessions can take place in person or online, depending on what feels most comfortable. If you’re unsure whether your situation fits, I'm happy to talk things through.

About Brian

Brian Donaldson

I’m Brian Donaldson, a Calgary-based mediator who works with individuals, businesses and organizations to resolve disputes efficiently and respectfully.

I’m a Qualified Mediator (Q.Med.) with experience helping people navigate conflict in a practical and grounded way, focusing on outcomes that last.

Before focusing on mediation, I founded and led two technology companies that grew internationally. That work involved constant negotiation between partners, teams, clients and stakeholders with different perspectives and pressures.

I saw how quickly conflict can harden when people feel unheard or misunderstood — and how much easier resolution becomes when conversations slow down and clarity returns.

In mediation, creating that kind of space is often the turning point — where people begin to feel more settled, and a way forward starts to come into view.

Alongside mediation, I’ve spent many years mentoring entrepreneurs and leaders. My approach there is similar: rather than telling people what to do, I ask questions that help them think clearly and find a path from where they are to where they want to be.

Today I mediate through the Alberta Court of Justice and in private settings, working with individuals, professionals, businesses and communities. I help people sort things out and get their ducks in a row — enough to move forward.

Working With Me

Mediation can feel uncertain at the start. I create a calm, structured environment where people feel heard, respected, and able to think clearly about what comes next.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

  • A steady, neutral presence throughout
  • Clear structure so the process feels manageable
  • Space for both sides to be heard without escalation
  • A focus on practical outcomes that work

You’ll be guided through the process step by step — without pressure, and while maintaining control of the outcome.

I begin by meeting privately with each side to understand the situation from their perspective and what matters to them.

We then meet together to clarify the main areas of dispute, explore interests and consider possible paths to resolution. I guide a structured, respectful conversation where options are explored openly and realistically.

As the conversation develops, what initially feels uncertain often starts to make more sense, and practical options begin to take shape.

Sessions can take place in person or online, depending on what's best for you. Many conflicts can be resolved in a single meeting, while more complex situations may take more time. We move at a pace that allows for sound, workable decisions.

You’re welcome to attend with or without a lawyer. Lawyers are fully welcome in the process.

My rate is $350 per hour, typically shared between the parties unless you agree otherwise.

I believe mediation should be accessible. In some circumstances, reduced-fee or pro-bono mediation may be available where cost would otherwise be a barrier.
